Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center (AVES) is seeking an ICU Managing/Hospitalist Veterinarian to work alongside our emergency and specialty teams, assisting in the intake and management of hospitalized emergency patients, creating and recommending treatment plans, maintaining and updating medical records, and facilitating transfers to the appropriate specialty services as needed. The hospitalist is an overnight only position and will always have a second doctor scheduled with them.
AVES is a progressive, fast-paced multi-disciplinary hospital that was established in 2014 and has had exponential growth since inception. AVES is locally managed by one of the original founders, Lindsay Vaughn, DVM, DACVECC and joined the NVA-Compassion First Network in 2021 to accelerate their growth and network with other best-in-class specialty and emergency hospitals. AVES is proud to offer numerous specialty services including Internal Medicine, Interventional Radiology, Surgery, Neurology, Critical Care, Medical Oncology, and Diagnostic Imaging. We partner with CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets to provide Cardiology services to our hospitalized patients.
Our facility offers ultrasound, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy, x-ray, and high-flow oxygen, allowing us to truly provide gold standard medical care to our patients. In 2025, AVES will be moving to a new state of the art facility that is approximately 45,000 square feet, and numerous additional services will be added to our hospital. The eligible candidate should be a self-motivated individual that has great attention to detail in order to provide the highest quality of medicine to our hospitalized pets. The candidate should have strong desire to contribute positively to our family style culture and lead with kindness in all actions provided to our patients, our clients, and our referring community. Collaboration is a founding principle at AVES therefore the eligible candidate will work alongside emergency veterinarians and specialists that value collaboration and co-management of cases.
Hospitalist responsibilities:
-Receive transfers from the emergency veterinarians that require hospitalization. Patients may be transferred to specialists the following day or may be discharged by the hospitalist on the following day.
-Continue care for specialty patients that are currently hospitalized.
-Order, review, and interpret diagnostic tests.
-Create tailored and thorough treatment plans for inpatients including medical therapies as well as next diagnostic steps.
-Maintain meticulous and accurate medical records.
-Provide clear and complete communication to clients including recommendations, suspected prognosis, and current clinical status of their pets.
-Provide referral letters to referring veterinarians as well as taking transfer calls from referring veterinarians regarding incoming patients.
-Attend morning rounds to collaborate with specialists on the currently hospitalized patients.
-Occasional receiving of patients as time allows pending both inpatient and outpatient caseload.
-Contribute to a fantastic team of emergency veterinarians.
Requirements:
-DVM or VMD licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas.
-Active DEA license.
-Prior ER/hospitalist experience; internship training preferred.
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
